"To give a brief recap, my best friend Alej and I were neighbors and lived in a 4-unit old victorian building. There was a fire that broke out at 4am Thursday morning and not a single fire detector went off. An unhoused man saw the flames and woke up the whole building. If he hadnt, my dog and I would have died in our sleep from the smoke filling my apartment. My neighbors and their pets would also have died or been severly injured. Our landlords have been extremely unclear and have left us unguided without many resources to navigate this situation. We frantically packed up our apartments in less than 24hrs, loaded up a uhaul and threw everything in a storage unit. My two neighbors had their apartments fully destroyed by the fire. Although mine and Alej apartments were not burned, every single thing we own has been damaged by smoke toxins and potentially asbestos. Our storage unit is filled with our belongings however most things will need to be replaced. Many things were left behind like our couches, dining tables, etc. We are grateful for the love and support of our loved ones, but we will need community support."
